My name is Fab Ian Duenas.

I am a Rutgers University graduate with an Exercise Science major and a Psychology minor. My areas of interest include exercising, playing instruments, and conversing with strangers.

I was born and raised in the Philippines. My family immigrated to the States when I was only 11 years old. Growing up in an archipelago, I was naturally always fond of beaches. On the other hand, the deep blue ocean was one of my greatest fears. I often pondered how deep the waters went. These were one of the fears that controlled me. One day, my family decided to go out on a boat ride. Weary from rowing the oars, my father jumped into the ocean and asked me and my brothers to join. My brothers didn’t hesitate. At that moment, I decided to stand on the shaky boat, close my eyes, and jump into the deep, dark unknown.

I decided to seek discomfort.

That experience taught me that growth can only truly happen through discomfort.

A couple of years later, I was a senior in high school with a BMI that categorized me as obese. I realized that I once again became too comfortable and that I had another fear; the fear of going to the gym and putting in massive amounts of work. The fear of getting out of the couch after a long day at school and working out instead of watching television or playing games. Once again, I had to conquer my fears one small step at a time. I set out to make a change. The small differences that I was making with each day taught me values of patience and perseverance. Two years after that, I lost fifty pounds of fat and gained strength quadruple the amount that I started with. One day, I wore a shirt and realized that I wasn’t concerned about how my man books would pop out. I sat down and wasn’t insecure about how my stomach would protrude. I looked in the mirror and felt proud of myself. I had an unparalleled newfound confidence. That was the moment that I fell in love with fitness. I reached the point where I became comfortable being uncomfortable. This was a lesson to me. In a similar way that I did, I want to be able to help other people push past their boundaries and make a change in their lives.

Aside from my personal interests, I also have professional interests. During my time at Rutgers, I worked as a Teaching Assistant for a class of almost 200 students. There, I was able to learn, through success and failures, leadership.

While being a student at Rutgers University during fall and spring, I spent my free time doing volunteer work and working in rehabilitation facilities. During my freshmen year, I volunteered at Mount Sinai West Hospital in Manhattan, NY in the rehabilitation wing. During my sophomore and junior years, I worked in two Physical Therapy clinics in North Bergen, NJ and Guttenberg, NJ. Those experiences taught me responsibility, discipline, and initiative.
