Introduction to Caribbean Literature

In this course you will become acquainted with major authors, themes, and literary movements that have emerged in the Caribbean. The course incorporates texts, music and film and employs an interdisciplinary perspective in exploring Caribbean literature. Some topics that will organize our discussions include: empire, revolution, sugar and labor, decolonization, storytelling and the oral tradition, ritual and carnival, diaspora, and constructions of race, class, gender, and sexuality. The course is taught in English and it includes authors from the English, French and Spanish-speaking islands and continental enclaves.
